Joint Response in Somalia

Last week, the second phase of the Joint Response in Somalia started. This aid programme consists of Dutch organisations and is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dorcas joined in August and during this second phase of the programme we will closely work together with Medair.

In this second phase we focus on creating food security and treating malnourished children. The current extreme drought is a serious threat to them. To prevent these children from dying of hunger, we are training 200 people. Ten thousand children are screened for malnourishment and we expect to treat over 1,800 of these children with special nourishment.

We also work to make safe water more available. 1,500 households (approximately 9,000 people) will receive water filters that greatly improve the quality of their water. 3,000 households will take part in hygiene training sessions so that they can effectively prevent the spread of illness.
